Lines Around the Mouth

LINES AROUND the MOUTH

Why Are They There and What are the Options?

As you age, you lose collagen and fat in your face and lips. Your supporting bone structure also diminishes. This loss of collagen, fat and bone structure, can lead to small lips and fine lines both above and below the lips. In addition, skin loosens as you age and can cause dimpling and multiple fine lines in your chin and mouth area. This combination of changes can give you an unhappy and more stern look – probably not the way you want to look to your family, friends, and colleagues.

Fortunately, there are remedies for these age related changes.

1. Restore Volume

Usually, we need to restore the volume in and around the lip area. Sometimes, the chin and lower face also needs to be addressed with filler. Filler is temporary (it will usually last 8 – 12 months in the lip area). My preferred technique for injecting is with a cannula as this is safest technique and it reduces the possibility of bruising. You can expect some swelling for 2 – 5 days after.

2. Relax Muscles

Small amounts of Botox can be used above the lip to soften the action of the perioral muscles. For some clients, this is all they need. Botox can also be injected into the muscles that pull the corners of your mouth down. This helps relieve the ‘sad look’ that these lines give you.

3. Increase Collagen

Collagen plumping treatments can be very helpful for the fine lines around the chin and mouth area. At Viva Medical Aesthetics, we use Syneron Sublative treatments which deliver radio-frequency to the dermis to stimulate collagen production and help create even skin texture. Laser Genesis treatments can also be used for plumping and tightening in this area.

4. Medical Grade Skin Care

Having an effective skin care regime that includes retinol, antioxidants, and growth factors is also helpful for maintaining skin elasticity and turgor.
